What to Expect?
08:30 – Private Pick-up in Hanoi Old Quarter 🚙
- 👮 Your guide and driver meet you in the hotel lobby and take you to a private air-conditioned car or van. The route runs east on the expressway toward Hai Phong and Quang Ninh, roughly 150 km and about 2.5 hours without stops.
- 🌾 The city gives way to the flat green Red River Delta: duck ponds, brick kilns, rice paddies and the odd roadside shrine. Your guide can fill the ride with context on northern Vietnamese village life and the history of the bay.
11:30 – Boarding at Tuan Chau Marina 🛳
- ⚓ At Tuan Chau Marina your guide handles the permits and port check-in, so you only need your passport (or a clear digital copy). A cold towel and welcome drink are waiting when you step aboard.
- ⛵ Your private day cruise vessel has an air-conditioned dining lounge and an open sundeck. Your captain and crew introduce themselves, and the engine starts for the six-hour loop of Route 2.
12:00 – Cruising into the Heart of the Bay & Seafood Lunch 🍽
- 🌊 Leaving the marina behind, the water turns from brown-green to a flat jade. Limestone towers rise straight out of the sea on both sides, some topped with scrub forest, others bare and streaked gray and orange.
- 🐉 Halong means “descending dragon.” Local legend says dragons sent by the Jade Emperor spat jewels and jade into the sea to block invaders, and those became the islands. Ask your guide to tell it as it was told to them.
🍜 Lunch is served at your table while the boat keeps moving:
- French fries
- Cucumber and Tomato salad
- Pan-fried Gulf of Tonkin White Prawns with Garlic & Butter
- Wok-tossed Squid with Sweet & Sour Pineapple
- Hand-rolled Hanoi-style Crispy Spring Rolls
- Steamed Sea Bass with Ginger and Scallions
- Seasonal Garden Greens & Steamed Jasmine Rice
- Steam Rice
- Fresh Sliced Tropical Fruits
💡 Note: The menu changes with the day’s catch. Vegetarian, vegan and non-seafood meals are prepared with advance notice.
13:15 – Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave, Bo Hon Island 📸
- 🚶 You land on Bo Hon Island and climb about 100 stone steps through shaded forest to the cave mouth. The climb is the hardest part of the visit, and the walkway inside is mostly level.
- 🔦 Sung Sot is the largest cave in Halong Bay. Two vast chambers cover over 10,000 square meters, with ceilings reaching roughly 30 meters. Stalactites hang like frozen curtains, and colored lights pick out the formations.
- 📸 French explorers named it the “Cave of Surprises” for the size of the space behind its small entrance. Allow about an hour, and keep your hands off the rock: skin oils stop the formations growing.
14:45 – Kayaking or Bamboo Boat at Hang Luon 🚣
- ⛵ A short sail brings you to Hang Luon, a sea tunnel cut into the foot of a limestone cliff. Choose a double kayak and paddle yourselves, or sit back in a bamboo boat rowed by a local boatman.
- 🛶 Both routes pass through a low arch into a round, saltwater lagoon with sheer walls on every side. The water is calm and green, and the silence is startling after the engine. Wild macaques live on the cliffs above, and you will often see them on the rocks or in the trees.
- 📸 Whether the arch can be crossed depends on the tide and sea conditions that day, and your guide makes the call.
15:45 – Titov Island: Summit Climb or Beach Time 🏖
Titov Island is named after Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited the bay with Ho Chi Minh in 1962. It has a small crescent of pale sand and a steep wooded hill behind it.
- 🗻 Climb: The 400 stone steps to the summit pavilion take about 15 to 20 minutes up at a steady pace. At the top, dozens of limestone islands spread across the water in every direction.
- ⛱ Beach: Swim in the calm cove, lie under the umbrellas, or drink a cold coconut from the beach stalls.
With about an hour on the island, most guests choose one of the two. A quick climber can fit in a short swim as well.
17:00 – Afternoon Tea on the Sundeck 🌅
- 🌄 Back on board, the boat turns toward Tuan Chau and the crew lays out Vietnamese tea, sliced tropical fruit, crisps and light snacks. Take a sun lounger on the open deck and watch the islands slide past in the lower afternoon light.
- 📸 From late autumn to early spring the sun sits low by this hour, which gives the best photographs of the day. In summer sunset comes after you dock, so expect bright daylight instead.
18:00 – Tuan Chau Marina & Express Return to Hanoi 🚌
- ⛵ You step off the boat at Tuan Chau and rejoin your driver. The air-conditioned ride back follows the same expressway, and most guests nap or sort through photos.
- ⏰ You reach your Hanoi hotel at about 20:00, depending on traffic. Evening traffic into Hanoi is usually the slowest stretch, so avoid booking a dinner reservation before 20:30.

Good to know
- Best time to go: October to early December brings dry, clear days of roughly 20 to 28°C. April and May are warm and generally settled. January to March is cool, often hazy or drizzly, and the water is cold. June to September is hot and humid, with the highest risk of storms.
- Route 2 vs. Route 1: Route 2 is the longer, central-bay circuit of about 6 hours, with more to do (cave, kayaking, hiking, swimming). Route 1 is shorter, at about 4 hours, with less activity.
- Fitness: Expect about 100 steps at Sung Sot Cave and 400 at Titov. Titov is optional, and the beach is a good alternative.
- Passport: Carry your passport or a clear digital copy for the port safety check at Tuan Chau.
- Visa: Citizens of the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Japan, South Korea and several other countries can enter visa-free for up to 45 days. Travelers from the US, Canada and Australia need an e-visa (valid up to 90 days, from US$25 for single entry). Rules change, so check the official Vietnam e-visa portal before you fly.
- Currency: Vietnam uses the Vietnamese dong (VND). Cards are accepted at most Hanoi hotels, but carry cash for the beach stalls and tips.
- Weather: If storm warnings stop boats from sailing, you will be offered another date or a full refund under the booking terms.
