What to Expect?

7:00 AM – Pickup from Hanoi Old Quarter

The day starts with hotel pickup in Hanoi’s Old Quarter between 7:00 and 7:45 AM, followed by a roughly two-hour drive south. The route runs through the Red River Delta’s open countryside, past rice paddies and small roadside villages, with a short 15 to 20-minutes rest stop along the way.

10:30 AM – Hoa Lu Ancient Capital

The first stop is Hoa Lu, Vietnam’s capital during the Đinh and early Lê dynasties in the 10th century. A guide walks the group through temples built for Kings Đinh Tiên Hoàng and Lê Đại Hành, set against the same limestone backdrop that made this valley defensible as a capital in the first place, a detail that gives the afternoon’s scenery some historical weight before the boat ride even starts.

12:00 PM – Buffet Lunch

Guests stop at a local restaurant for a buffet lunch with a wide spread of Vietnamese dishes, including vegetarian, chicken, beef, and pork options, giving mixed groups room to choose rather than working around a fixed set menu.

1:00 PM – The Tam Coc Boat Tour

This is the centerpiece of the day. Guests board a sampan steered by a local rower, and the boat moves at an easy pace down the Ngo Dong River, passing through three cave passages carved by the water itself: Hang Ca, Hang Hai, and Hang Ba. Each cave dips low enough that the boat’s canopy has to fold flat, and the transition from bright river valley to dark cave and back again happens several times over the course of the ride. Between caves, the scenery opens into wide stretches where water buffalo wade in the shallows and, in season, lotus flowers cover parts of the river’s surface. The full ride runs 1.5 to 2 hours.

2:30 PM – Cycling Through the Countryside

Back on land, a 45-minute bike ride winds through nearby villages and rice paddies, with limestone cliffs framing the route on both sides. It’s a slower, more grounded look at rural Ninh Binh than the boat ride alone offers.

3:30 PM – Mua Cave and Lying Dragon Mountain

The next stop is Mua Cave, where a staircase of nearly 500 steps climbs Lying Dragon Mountain. The climb is the most demanding stretch of the day, but it opens onto a full view of Tam Coc’s river winding through the karst peaks below, generally the photo travelers remember most.

5:30 PM – Return to Hanoi

The drive back to Hanoi begins around 5:30 PM, with most guests dropped off at their hotel or a central Old Quarter location between 7:00 and 7:30 PM.
