7-Days North Vietnam Itinerary: Ha Noi, Sapa, Ninh Binh & Halong Bay

×

Overview

Northern Vietnam holds a beauty found nowhere else in the country: mist-wrapped mountains, rice terraces carved into valleys by hand over centuries, and a limestone bay that seems to belong to another world entirely. This 7 Day North Vietnam Itinerary Package Tour was designed for travelers who want to go beyond Hanoi’s Old Quarter and actually spend time in the highlands and the bay — not just glimpse them from a bus window.

Over seven days and six nights, this northern Vietnam tour package takes you from Hanoi’s thousand-year streets up into the Hoang Lien Son mountains around Sapa, back down through Ninh Binh’s “Halong Bay on Land,” and out onto the karst-studded waters of Halong Bay itself for a night aboard a luxury cruise. If you’re searching for a 7 days north Vietnam itinerary that goes deep into one region rather than skimming the whole country, this is the route our consultants build most often for first-time visitors to the north.

Additional Info

Child policy

  • Under 4 years old: Travel free of charge, sharing a bed with a parent in the hotel room and a berth in the cruise cabin. A second child under 4 in the same family is charged at 75% of the adult rate.
  • Ages 5 to 8: Charged 75% of the adult rate, sharing existing bedding with parents.
  • Ages 9 and up: Charged the full adult rate.
  • Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times, including during the Sapa trek, the cruise, and the Trang An boat trip.
  • Valid ID or passport may be requested at hotel check-in and on the cruise to confirm a child’s age.
  • Given the trekking days and the 500-step climb at Mua Cave, families with very young children may prefer the Fansipan cable car over the full Muong Hoa Valley trek on Day 6.

Cancellation policy

Because this package bundles a Halong Bay cruise cabin, booked and paid for in advance with limited allotment, our cancellation terms are more conservative than a single-day tour:

  • Free cancellation for notice given more than 30 days before departure.
  • 50% charge of the total package value for cancellations made 15 to 30 days before departure.
  • 75% charge of the total package value for cancellations made 7 to 15 days before departure.
  • 100% charge (no refund) for cancellations made within 7 days of departure, or in case of no-show.
  • If the Halong Bay cruise is cancelled due to severe weather or a government directive, guests are offered a rescheduled cruise date or a full refund for that portion of the package, without affecting the rest of the itinerary.

Good to know

  • Road time: This is a road-heavy itinerary — the Hanoi–Sapa transfer runs 5.5–6 hours each way. All transfers use modern, air-conditioned limousine vehicles with reclining seats, and the drive itself passes through some of the most scenic mountain scenery in Vietnam.
  • Altitude and temperature: Sapa sits at roughly 1,500 meters and can be significantly cooler than Hanoi, especially at night — pack layers even in summer.
  • Currency and cash: Vietnamese dong is the primary currency. ATMs are available in Sapa and Ninh Binh towns, but cash is more reliable for smaller hillside markets and craft villages.
  • Pace and fitness: A moderate level of fitness is recommended for the Cat Cat Village trek, the full Muong Hoa Valley trek on Day 6, and Mua Cave’s 500 steps.
  • Single travelers: A single supplement of $50 USD per room per night applies for solo travelers requiring their own room.

What to bring

  • Comfortable trekking shoes for Cat Cat Village, the Muong Hoa Valley, and Mua Cave’s 500 steps
  • A light jacket or fleece — Sapa can be genuinely cold, especially from November to March
  • Swimwear for kayaking and swimming in Halong Bay
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat
  • Camera or smartphone — Fansipan’s cloud sea and Trang An’s karsts are two of the most photographed views in northern Vietnam
  • Passport (for hotel check-in) and a printed or digital copy of your e-visa
  • Motion sickness tablets if you’re prone to seasickness on the cruise
  • Cash in Vietnamese dong for Sapa’s hillside markets and personal purchases

How much does this 7-day North Vietnam tour package cost?

Pricing varies with hotel category, season, and group size, ranging from budget-friendly 3-star packages to premium 5-star itineraries with private cruise cabins. Traveling in the shoulder season (April–May or September) typically offers the best balance of good weather and lower rates. Contact us for a quote matched to your exact dates.
Is the road trip from Hanoi to Sapa and Ninh Binh tiring?

Is the road trip from Hanoi to Sapa and Ninh Binh tiring?

Less than most travelers expect. The Hanoi–Sapa leg (5.5–6 hours) is the longest drive in the itinerary, but it runs on a modern expressway with scenic mountain views, and our vehicles use reclining limousine-style seating built for long-distance comfort. The Ninh Binh day trip is a single, well-paced day rather than an overnight relocation, so the itinerary never asks you to pack and unpack more than necessary.
What is the best season to book this North Vietnam tour?

What is the best season to book this North Vietnam tour?

Two windows stand out. September to October brings Sapa's rice terraces to golden harvest color, arguably the most photogenic time to visit. February to April offers cooler, drier weather across the north with blooming spring flowers in Sapa. Avoid June to August if possible, when the north sees its hottest, most humid weather and occasional heavy rain.
Can we replace Sapa with another destination like Ha Giang?

Can we replace Sapa with another destination like Ha Giang?

Yes. This itinerary is built as a flexible framework rather than a fixed program. Ha Giang's karst plateau and mountain passes make for a compelling alternative to Sapa, particularly for travelers who have already visited Sapa on a previous trip. Let your consultant know your preference when requesting a quote, and the itinerary will be adjusted accordingly.
Can this package be customized for families or couples?

Can this package be customized for families or couples?

Yes. Families traveling with children can choose the Fansipan cable car over the full Muong Hoa Valley trek, request connecting hotel rooms, or adjust the pace around Mua Cave's steps. Couples and honeymooners frequently upgrade to a private balcony cabin on the Halong Bay cruise and a mountain-view room in Sapa. Simply let your travel consultant know your group composition when requesting a quote.
