Ultimate Hanoi City Full Day Tour: One Price, Every Highlight Included

The day begins with pickup between 8:00 and 8:30 AM, and the guide gives a short orientation to the day’s route while heading toward the first stop.

The tour opens at Tran Quoc Pagoda, built in the 6th century on Golden Fish Island in West Lake, making it the oldest pagoda in the city. The setting, a red-brick tower rising over calm water, gives an early, quieter contrast to the busier sites later in the day.

Next comes the Ho Chi Minh Complex, where guests can view the embalmed body of Ho Chi Minh and walk the gardens surrounding the stilt house where he lived and worked from 1954 to 1969. The visit continues to the One Pillar Pagoda, built to resemble a lotus flower rising from a single stone column, widely considered one of the most architecturally unusual religious structures in the world. 

Modest dress, shoulders and knees covered, is required throughout this stop. Note that the mausoleum itself is closed on Mondays and Fridays, and closes entirely for roughly two months each year (mid-June to mid-August) for annual maintenance, though the surrounding grounds remain open for viewing and photos during that period.

The tour continues to the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology, covering the customs, dress, and daily life of the country’s 54 recognized ethnic groups through full-scale house reconstructions and everyday artifacts. On Mondays, when the Ethnology Museum is closed, the itinerary substitutes a visit to the Vietnamese Women’s Museum instead, keeping the day’s cultural content intact regardless of the day of the week.

Guests break for lunch at a local restaurant, with a spread of eight Vietnamese dishes offering a broader introduction to the country’s cuisine than a single dish would.

After lunch, the group visits the Temple of Literature, founded in 1070 as Vietnam’s first national university and dedicated to Confucian scholarship. Stone stelae mounted on the backs of carved turtles record the names of doctoral graduates going back centuries, a detail that connects directly to Vietnam’s continuing emphasis on academic achievement today.

The final stop is Hoa Lo Prison, built by French colonial authorities to hold Vietnamese political prisoners and later used by North Vietnam to hold American prisoners of war, who nicknamed it the “Hanoi Hilton.” The museum’s exhibits cover both periods, giving a more complete picture of the site’s history than either era alone would.

The tour wraps up between 4:15 and 4:30 PM, with guests dropped back at their hotel.
